This course aims at developing advanced oral skills. Students are trained to listen to details and infer meaning from context. In addition to these skills students get to be able to summarize main ideas, make inferences and draw conclusions. The course also aims at developing students’ conversational skills in various topics by working in small groups for discussions.

This course is an advanced course for students studying English and introductory to those studying Literature. It is a continuing course for reading skills, listening and comprehension, and writing skills courses. The course is also considered a pre-requisite for all Literature courses. It aims to expose students to the history of English and provide them with the basic necessary skills for reading literature, which can be developed in the coming to-be-studied courses. The teacher will instruct the students the most important and common literary terms in addition to giving them an introduction assessed with training about reading literature and writing about it.

The course examines main points of development in the short story tradition in English from the nineteenth century to today, drawing on central concepts from short story theory from Edgar Allan Poe to contemporary theorists. In addition, it focuses on the genre of the short story in comparative literature of the nineteenth to twenty-first centuries. Stories are chosen for different writers. In Which Stories range from very short to long ones, stories that stand alone to ones that are linked in collections, and classics to contemporary pieces Since the short story is a form essentially without rules, attention will be paid to the ways that a great variety of stories take shape and help to define the genre. Typically, each week’s reading assignment will be about analyzing each story into its main elements.

The course Writing 1 aims to develop students’ skills in writing clear, organized paragraphs. Students learn the stages of the writing process, including pre-writing, editing, and writing different types of paragraphs. Students will also consider how poems produce such meanings. This course familiarizes students with how English sentences are analyzed. The course has two main aims: first, it describes the principles followed in analyzing sentences. Second, it describes, in general terms, the framework of syntactic theory as developed by Noam Chomsky. It introduces the students to some technical terms such as constituents, categories and functions, and it describes the relations that hold between the elements of the sentence. The course also discusses the various types of complements, adjuncts, and their uses.

This course presents the major concepts in linguistics – from how children learn language to why men and women speak differently, through all the key elements of language. Text and Discourse Analysis is a practical, user-friendly guide to the issues and methods associated with text and discourse analysis. In this skills-enabling volume, Raphael Salkie looks at a range of cohesive devices.
